My Battle-Tested Cycling Layering System for Any Condition

I was somewhere between Liège and Bastogne, about 280 kilometres into a 400 km overnight ride, when the heavens opened. Not a polite Belgian drizzle, but a full-on summer storm that turned the Ardennes roads into rivers. Temperature had dropped nine degrees in an hour. My phone GPS said I was two hours and forty minutes from home, but that assumed I could still pedal at my current speed, with soaking wet kit and hands that had gone from uncomfortable to genuinely useless. It was my own fault. I had cut corners on the rain jacket, trusting a lightweight shell that was never designed for that kind of sustained punishment.

Since that night, I’ve become mildly obsessive about weather gear for ultra distance cycling. If you’re only riding two or three hours, bad kit is uncomfortable. If you’re riding 300, 400, or 600 km, bad kit can end your ride, or worse. This article is my attempt to share everything I’ve learned: the cycling layering system that actually works when you’re too far from home to make compromises, the specific pieces I trust on multi-day adventures, and the mistakes I made so you don’t have to.

Why Weather Is an Ultra Distance Problem Like No Other

Standard cycling advice on clothing is based on rides of two to four hours. You dress for the conditions when you leave, and if you get it wrong, you’re home in an hour. Ultra distance is a completely different game.

When I’m riding a 600 km brevet or a race like the UBF Pyrénées, I’m on the road for anywhere from 20 to 36 hours non-stop. In that time I’ll go through multiple nights and days, climb above 2,000 metres and descend into valleys, and ride through microclimates that can differ by 15 degrees Celsius over a single hour. Belgian weather, even in summer, can throw anything at you: morning mist, afternoon sun, evening thunderstorms, and pre-dawn cold that makes your fingers lock up on the bars.

The weight versus protection trade-off that you might shrug at on a sportive becomes absolutely critical when you’re self-supported. Every gram counts over 600 km. But getting hypothermic 400 km from home because you saved 80 grams on your jacket is not a trade-off worth making.

The other challenge nobody talks about enough: your body’s temperature regulation changes dramatically over a long ride. In the first four hours you’re generating enormous heat; by hour eighteen, after sleep deprivation starts biting and your power output drops, you’re cold at temperatures that felt fine at the start. Your kit needs to work across that entire spectrum.

The Base Layer: Don’t Get This Wrong

The base layer is the foundation of everything. For ultra distance cycling rain gear performance, I’ve settled firmly on merino wool or a merino-synthetic blend rather than pure synthetic. Here’s why: synthetics manage moisture brilliantly for the first few hours, but after twelve or fifteen hours of riding, the odour becomes genuinely demoralising. I’m not being precious. Odour fatigue is a real thing on long rides, and merino’s natural antimicrobial properties keep things tolerable for much longer.

For temperature regulation, I run a lightweight merino base (150–175 gsm) in summer conditions and a midweight (200–250 gsm) when temperatures drop below 12 degrees. The key is a snug, wicking fit with minimal seams at the shoulders. After 20 hours in the saddle, every seam tells its story on your skin.

What I actively avoid: cotton (stays wet, gets heavy, chafes catastrophically), ultra-thin synthetics that ride up under a bib when you’re off the bike, and anything with poor shoulder seam placement. Details matter enormously when you’re suffering at hour twenty.

The Mid Layer: Only When You Mean It

In typical Belgian summer ultra conditions, I rarely use a dedicated mid layer. The base-to-jersey-to-shell cycling layering system handles most scenarios. But for alpine rides, early-season events, or anything where temperatures below five degrees Celsius are realistic, a lightweight gilet or thin insulated vest changes the game completely.

It’s packable, it targets the core, and it layers under your rain jacket without adding bulk to your arms — which you need free for steering and braking. For the Everesting attempts I’ve done outdoors, where you’re riding the same climb all day and all night, I keep a very lightweight down gilet stashed under my saddle. It takes up almost no space, weighs under 100 grams, and on the fourth or fifth descent at 3 AM it’s the difference between suffering and simply managing.

The Rain Jacket: The Most Important Decision You’ll Make

This is where I’ll spend the most time, because getting the rain jacket right is the single most important gear decision for ultra distance cycling in variable-weather climates. I’ve gone through more jackets than I care to count, and here’s the unvarnished truth.

Forget the price-to-waterproof-rating ratio that shop marketing pushes. A jacket rated 20,000mm waterproof but only 5,000g breathability will cook you alive at any meaningful power output. For ultra distance cycling weather gear, breathability is at least as important as waterproofing. You need a jacket that handles sustained 200–250W efforts while keeping rain out. And that’s a genuinely difficult engineering challenge that cheap shells simply fail at.

Look for a minimum 20,000mm waterproof rating combined with at least 20,000g/m² breathability. Gore-Tex Paclite Plus, Polartec NeoShell, and the newer post-PFAS fabrics from specialist cycling brands are all excellent options. Yes, they cost more. No, there is no meaningful shortcut here.

The fit matters enormously. The jacket needs to compress small enough to fit in a jersey pocket or small saddlebag. Long velcro-adjustable cuffs that seal over gloves are non-negotiable on a multi-hour rain stage. And one feature most reviewers completely ignore: underarm seam placement. On a long ride in the drops, your arms are extended forward for hours at a time. Poorly placed underarm seams cause chafing that escalates from irritating to genuinely skin-shredding by hour fifteen. Try the jacket on in your riding position before you commit to buying it.

Protecting the Extremities: Where Rides Are Won and Lost

Hands: The First Thing to Fail

In cold and wet conditions, hands go numb long before the rest of you. Once you lose finger dexterity, you lose the ability to brake safely, shift gears, or open a gel wrapper. I’ve been in situations where I couldn’t work my handlebar bag zip at 3 AM because my hands had simply stopped responding. A genuinely dangerous place to be at speed on a descent.

My system: waterproof overmitts on top of thin thermal gloves. The overmitts, bulky as they look, are transformative in sustained rain. They trap dry air next to your hands even when the outside is completely soaked. For summer rides where rain is possible but not certain, long-fingered lightweight gloves with a DWR coating handle short showers fine. But if there’s any real uncertainty about sustained rain, the overmitts go in the jersey pocket. They weigh next to nothing and pack flat. Never leave them at home.

Feet: The Slow-Burn Problem

Wet feet are survivable for a few hours. After twelve hours with wet feet, your skin starts to macerate, blisters form under blisters, and every pedal stroke becomes unpleasant. After twenty hours? Your feet become a genuine limiting factor for finishing the event.

The solution is a layered approach here too: wool cycling socks. Again, merino over pure synthetic for multi-day comfort, covered by neoprene shoe covers in cold or drizzly conditions, and full waterproof overshoes in sustained heavy rain. The neoprene covers double as wind protection and are worth their weight in gold when temperatures drop below ten degrees.

One tip I pass on to every ultra rider I know: carry a spare pair of socks. Even when everything else gets wet, dry socks at hour twelve are a morale-saving, ride-saving act. Dry feet change your whole mental state in a way that’s disproportionate to how minor the intervention seems from the outside.

Head and Neck: Small Fixes, Big Returns

A thin cycling cap under the helmet handles most Belgian conditions. It’s one of those old-school cycling habits that refuses to die because it simply works. For rain, check that your helmet has decent channelling to direct water away from your face; a helmet rain cover makes a real difference in a sustained downpour at speed.

A buff or neck warmer is something I always carry in a jersey pocket regardless of the forecast. Temperature drops after midnight are inevitable on any long Belgian ride, and ten grams of merino wool around your neck makes a disproportionate difference to perceived warmth and morale. Never leave home without one. It has saved my night rides more times than I can count.

My Actual Ultra Kit: What Goes on the Bike

After years of refinement through the Tour du Mont Blanc Cyclo, La Bicinglette du Ventoux, the UBF Pyrénées, multiple Everestings, and dozens of 300 km+ brevets on Belgian roads, here’s what I actually carry on a summer ultra of 400 km or more:

  • Rain jacket (high breathability, packable, good cuffs): always on the bike, never optimistically left at home when the morning looks sunny
  • Waterproof glove overmitts — in a jersey pocket from the start
  • Neoprene shoe covers — in the saddlebag if not already on feet at the start
  • Merino buff / neck warmer — back jersey pocket, every single ride without exception
  • Thin cycling cap — worn under the helmet
  • Spare merino socks — frame bag or saddlebag
  • Lightweight arm warmers — even in summer, even in July; packable and vital when body temperature crashes at 3 AM
  • Down gilet (on any route with cols above 1,500m) — stuffed behind the saddle or in a top tube bag

Total additional weight of this complete weather cycling layering system: roughly 350–400 grams depending on your jacket choice. In return, you get the ability to ride through whatever Belgian roads, Ardennes climbs, or Pyrenean passes throw at you without being forced to abandon. That is an excellent deal at any price point.

Value for Money: Where to Spend and Where to Save

Not everything in this kit needs to be top-shelf. Here’s my honest assessment of where money genuinely matters versus where smart savings are completely fine.

Worth every euro: The rain jacket is your most important investment in this entire cycling layering system. A €280–380 jacket with genuinely good breathability will outlast and outperform three €90 alternatives, and it will keep you riding when the cheaper option would have you pulling over shivering at the roadside. The same argument applies to glove overmitts. Cheap neoprene covers fail within a season of ultra use.

Save without guilt: Arm warmers, buffs, and cycling caps are not technically complex garments. There is no meaningful performance difference between a €15 pair of arm warmers and a €60 branded equivalent. Same for socks, good quality merino wool at mid-range prices does everything the premium labels claim at twice the price.

The biggest mistake I see ultra riders make: buying cheap base layers. A quality merino base costs €65–90. A cheap synthetic costs €20. Over a 30-hour ride in mixed conditions, that €50 gap manifests as real skin discomfort, odour, and degraded thermoregulation. The base layer is touching your skin for thirty hours straight. It genuinely matters.

Pros, Cons, and Who This Cycling Layering System Is For

This all-weather gear cycling layering system is built specifically for riders doing 200 km and above. Randonneurs on brevets, ultra racers, unsupported challengers, and anyone taking on multi-day events where the weather forecast is irrelevant because you’ll be out long enough to experience all of it.

If you’re doing club rides and sportives, you don’t need all of this. Pick the right jacket and gloves for the day’s forecast and move on. The ultra rider’s reality is fundamentally different: we can’t check the forecast at the start and trust it for the next 30 hours. We need to carry our own weather insurance. And that insurance must be light enough not to ruin the experience when the sun inevitably comes out at hour four.

Pros: Genuinely all-conditions capable; total weight under 500 grams; fits in standard jersey pockets and a small saddlebag; merino base layers stay functional across multi-day events without the odour penalty of synthetics.

Cons: Higher upfront cost for the quality pieces; requires the discipline to pack emergency layers even on sunny starts; the full system is overkill for rides under six to eight hours.

Conclusion Cycling Layering System: Weather Is Not a Reason to Stop

If I could go back to that stormy night between Liège and Bastogne and give myself one piece of advice, it would be simple: stop being clever about weight savings on weather gear. The one area where every ultra distance cyclist should be conservative, where “good enough” genuinely isn’t good enough, is the kit standing between you and the elements at 3 AM in a Belgian summer storm.

I’ve now ridden well over 100,000 km on Belgian roads, including multiple events of 600 km and beyond. All of it is there because at some point, on some road, in some terrible weather, it was the thing that kept me pedalling forward.

The ultra community obsesses over frame weight, wheel aerodynamics, and power meter numbers. Spend half that energy on your weather system and you’ll finish more rides, suffer less, and probably go faster too — because dry, warm hands and feet work considerably better than cold, numb, unresponsive ones.
